Exceeding EPA Requirements

09 July 2013

Tier 4 and staying compliant:

Beginning 2015 all non-emergency applications of 750 HP and above will be required to follow Tier 4 regulations. California and other non-attainment areas were required to meet Tier 4 regulations back in 2014. New techniques in engine refinement can help achieve the Tier 2 and Tier 3 standards but meeting the Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final regulations may require one or more of the following:

• SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) used to control NOx emissions in diesel engine exhaust, the SCR can reduce exhaust by up to 90%. The SCR combines exhaust gases with ammonia to form urea (otherwise known as DEF or Diesel Emissions Fluid). After running through a catalyst, the resulting exhaust breaks down to elemental nitrogen, water vapor and carbon dioxide. The SCR became popular in 2011, to meet the Tier 4 Interim regulations, placed on California engine users.

• DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) A DPF traps and incinerates PM emissions in diesel exhaust.  To fulfill the regulations setup by the Tier 4 Final, a DPF must, most likely, be used. A DPF uses filters to trap soot particles. In 2014-2015 a combination of a SCR and DPF will most likely be required to meet the Tier 4 Final regulations, for ESP in California.

• EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) EGR’s may be used to further reduce NOx in diesel exhaust. EGR is an effective way of reducing your NOx and EGR equipped engines will not require SCR after-treatment.
